Question time - Don Smith

Brittany Cutter – admin & customer service assistant tells B&S about her time at Don Smith Blinds

How did you become involved in the blinds industry?

I applied for an apprenticeship at Don Smith Blinds in business and administration. Phi Pullin, (managing director)l gave me the opportunity do this and I've been working here now for about three and a half years. I really enjoy it, I’m glad to have a job which doesn't make it difficult to drag myself out of bed in the morning.

What excites you about the blinds industry?

For me the most exciting bit is problem solving and coming up with great solutions to really difficult windows. We pride ourselves on leading the industry with our skills. We can make a fully operational motorised obtuse Perfect Fit roof blinds.

What services does your company offer?

We offer a survey, manufacture and fit service for Perfect Fit Roof blinds. Blind companies come to us to go out on their behalf to do the job for them, companies trust us on our high standards.

Are people aware of the regulations that they will need to comply with?

I try to make as many people aware of the regulations as I can. I do believe there are still companies who do not acknowledge the importance. I process all of the orders and find myself having to repeatedly call for fixing heights. I think this is something that needs to be worked on by everybody, its there for a good reason.

Who has been the biggest influence in your career?

One hundred percent it is Phil, there isn't one thing he doesn't know about. Everyone wants to talk to Phil and pick his brains, I am lucky to have been taught by him and also have formed a great relationship with him.

What is the question you are most often asked in your business life?

I’d say the question I’m most often asked is along the lines of “How long are my blinds going to take”

What are the best/worst things about your job?

The best part about my job is that everyone who works here gets along really well, it’s like a big family, Phil and Corrina are my pretend mum and dad and Matt’s the annoying brother. I’d say the worst part about the job is rude customers but you’re never going to be able to avoid that in any circumstance.

What advice would you give to someone starting out in the industry?

Make sure you know exactly what you are selling when you arrive at the customers house. Be equipped with samples so that people can have visuals on what they are buying. Ensure that you know exactly how to measure and what deductions may need to be made during the manufacturing process.

What living person do you admire and why?

I have been asked this question a few times in my life and honestly, I cannot think of one person. I just think everyone should admire themselves; maybe I’ve just got a big head though.

Where would you most like to live?

To be honest, Northampton is a fine place to live. I’ve not really been to enough decent places to say I’d like to live there. London has the most going on in terms of the things I’m interested in such as the music scene however Northampton has got some great bands and venues, I can’t complain.

What is your favourite book?

Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell, the situation of Eleanor in the book was very similar to mine when I was younger. It’s nice to have a good book that you can relate to, makes you feel better.

How do you relax?

I usually relax with a bottle of wine each between me and my best mate Rhiannon, it’s pretty nice. After being a work all day it’s good to get some freshish air.

What sports team do you support?

I don’t follow any sports, I wish this question was ‘What is your favourite band’ I can answer that easy. The Barratts! These guys are my best friends and they are so talented, got to give them a little plug. Being a musician is basically a sport, you use more energy dancing around on stage than you do playing darts.

What is your ideal holiday?

My ideal holiday would be a nice few days in Amsterdam or Prague, luckily for me I am going to Amsterdam at the beginning of October. Dreams do come true.
